The Poetics of Being Seen: Screen Representations of British East Asians, a filmic journey

  • ROSA FONG

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

This capping paper for my PhD by Publication elucidates my corpus of publications produced over a six-year period. The work builds on and further articulates my artist practice. I give an account of my work as filmmaker and outline the guiding principles that support my personal subjective exploration of British Chinese identity, using notions of displacement, deconstruction and performativity.
I demonstrate how my filmic voice addresses questions of hybridity, postcolonialism and otherness. In so doing, I set out the dialogical relationship between theoretical underpinnings of the aforementioned terms and my own research practice.
