Abstract
The article serves as a contribution to the qualitative evaluation literature and as an extended obituary to Barry MacDonald who published a paper early in the emergence of qualitative evaluation entitled 'The Portrayal of Persons'. Following MacDonald, the paper argues for placing people/individuals at the centre of program evaluation.
