Abstract
In this article, Dr A B Michael and Dr B Roe present a selection of social theroes of ageing relevant to all clinicians practising geriatric medicine. These theories shed light on how older people understand themselves and others, and how they see and are seen by society. This insight is essential for a deeper understanding of the older patient, exploration of the impact of social factors on older life, and is an important part of clinical practice.
