Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to identify discursive strategies within Western media that construct the alterity and exclusion of the Roma and transform them in deixis of emotionality, helping majorities define their identity through objectifying, criminalizing, dehumanizing, and bordering “others.” We use content and discourse analysis of three popular dailies in three European countries (the United Kingdom, Italy, and France) to chart the discursive strategies that journalists and readers, through online comments accompanying articles, use to construct the Roma as objects of fear, disgust, shame, and anger. In these three countries Roma experienced forms of historical and contemporary persecution or discrimination (Clark and Rice, 2012; Picker, 2012; Sigona, 2005). We hope that by highlighting these aspects of media reporting and public discourse we can contribute to the Roma community’s efforts to reduce stigmatization and marginalization.
