Abstract

• Few studies have examined the factors contributing to sexual sadism and even less research have validated these theories
• The aim of the present chapter to propose a developmental model based on theoretically relevant factors associated to severe sadistic behaviours
• Aversive experiences during childhood (ex. neglect and abuse) are at the very foundation of severe sadistic behaviours.
• Juvenile antisocial behaviours and narcissistic traits are strongly related to the development of severe sadistic behaviours.
• In our model, there are three paths to sadistic behaviours: the disinhibition path, the schizoid path, and the narcissistic-meanness path.
