Abstract

This chapter focuses on the different ways the fragmented vintage aesthetic
manifests itself in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix, 2018–20), a
remake of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch (ABC, 1996–2000/The WB,
2000–03) sitcom, both of which are based on the Archie Comics book series.
After a brief introduction to the notion of contemporary witch identities and
the application of vintage within the context of film studies, we propose a
theoretical background of retro, faux-vintage, and anachronism, which may
be suitable for analyzing modern film productions that cannot be strictly
attributed to period films. This study explores fashion and film elements such
as colors and historical inspirations for characters’ styles in the first season
of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which creates a unique, anachronistic,
vintage-inspired look of the show.
