Abstract

The Chapter discusses the application of EU State aid rules to sport, in light of the role of the state in funding sports enterprise and the need to protect the fairness of the competition within the internal market. A number of cases have been decided by the Commission involving professional football clubs. Receiving state support through the use of public funds may negatively affect the competition both on and off the field.
