    Abstract

Many socialists and academics have discussed the relationships between socialism, national identity and patriotism since Marx’s dictum: ‘The working men have no country.’ Many discussions explore the incompatibilities between socialism and patriotism. In Britain, most socialists were in various ways patriotic. This chapter discusses the orgins and characteristics of a left-wing patriotism developed by much of the British left, and argues that such appeals to national identity had a remarkable vitality into the First World War and beyond.
