Abstract
In the growing expectation that research is conducted with, or generated by, participants, participatory approaches are gaining traction. This book review of Participatory Research in Sport and Physical Activity explores how the various aspects of the research process (i.e., research design, data collection, data analysis and knowledge mobilization and translation) can challenge historical hegemonic power dynamics by the integration of participatory approaches and instead aspires for greater equitable power sharing, as encouraged in the book by the 8 updated tenets. This book review highlights interesting chapters, important topics and tangible examples of participatory approaches in sport, physical activity and leisure. The review additionally emphasizes further progress and work which could expand the development and impact of participatory approaches, including the relationship between academic outputs and societal impact.
