Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the concepts of research, evaluation, and scholarship within medical education and training. Medical education research is a process of inquiry into the education and training of health professionals. The purpose of this inquiry is to answer a question about what is happening, how it is happening and why it is happening. The broad term ‘medical education research’ encompasses the concepts of research, evaluation, and scholarship in medical education. These concepts are often used interchangeably but they do differ. It explores the boundaries between these concepts, as well as their similarities and differences. This chapter offers guidance and tips for those interested in designing and carrying out medical education research—both qualitative research, and quantitative research—as well as evaluating educational interventions and engaging in scholarship.
