Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to overview how the Catholic Church has broadly understood and responded to the realities of sexual and gender diversities from a theological perspective. It surveys in particular the ‘marital morality’ that has characterised the Church’s theological approach to sexual ethics, before moving to the specific implications of this for how the Church has understood (and continues to understand) same-sex sexual acts. From here, the chapter summarises some of the key theological elements informing the Church’s understanding and response to gender diversities in particular, before reflecting on the implications of these perspectives vis-à-vis the Church’s views on education. The chapter concludes with some notes on how this context lays the groundwork for cultivating queer thriving in Catholic education.
