Abstract

This chapter discusses the premises of the book, primarily the dissolution of borders between media (e.g., film, television, mobile telephony) and the centrality of users practices of meaning making through media production, distribution and consumption. The ubiquity of screens and diverse mediations linked to transport, mobility and travel give new meaning to concepts such as deep mediatisation or spreadability. The chapter explains how the book advances research on media reconfigurations of place and space, tourism, transnationalism and cosmopolitanism, liquidity and borders, by building on previous research. This introductory chapter also outlines the main themes of the book, its interdisciplinarity and geographical spread, and discusses its main methodological approaches.
