Informal learning pedagogy: from music education to higher education

Research output: Contribution to conferencePosterpeer-review

Abstract

Informal learning pedagogy in music education has the potential to increase student inclusion, motivation and engagement. The pedagogical approach has largely been based on Professor Lucy Green's (2002) theory about how Popular Musicians Learn, where priority is given to aural learning, working in friendship groups, increased student choice and acknowledgement of the haphazard nature of musical learning. Although the theory was initially aimed at secondary school students, the approach has inspired the researcher to explore aspects of the approach that can be implemented and experienced in the Higher Education context. This poster presentation will highlight the underpinning literature relating to informal learning pedagogy in music education, and illuminate recent research and reflections generated by the researcher about how the theory has informed their practice, shaped their values, and enhanced their understanding of teaching and learning. Particular challenges and benefits of the approach will be explored, and key questions will be posed to ECR delegates to encourage dialogue and debate about informal learning pedagogy and the role it plays within the contemporary education context.
