Abstract

Objectives / Purpose / Background Purpose
The aim of the presentation is to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing psychological principals into a Foundation Year for Medicine programme. The Foundation Year for Medicine programme explicitly targets widening participation (WP) students.

Design / Background / Key points Background
A joint initiative from HEFCE/HEE, published in October 2017, invited Higher Education Institutions to bid for the expansion of undergraduate medical education places. The Government's priorities included widening participation and improving access to medicine, so that the medical workforce is more representative of the population it serves. Hence, a key component of our successful proposal for undergraduate medical education was the development of an innovative Foundation Year for Medicine programme for identified under-represented groups. Consistent with this ethos the programme incorporates core psychological curriculum whilst raising aspirations for local widening participation (WP) students. The Foundation Year for Medicine is leading change and innovation, and has a number of distinctive features including:
An innovative curriculum with psychological principals at the core Supporting recruitment and inclusion of those from non-traditional and underrepresented groups enabling local students who aspire to study medicine direct progression to the medical programme.

Methods / Conclusions / Outcomes Methods
Document analysis (such as curriculum validation documents), evaluations and personal reflections will explore the challenges and opportunities in implementing core psychological principals into the Foundation Year for Medicine.

Results / Outcomes / Conclusions
The presentation will conclude by exploring how the programme influenced the development of core psychological principals within the medical programme. Discussion will also focus on inclusive practices that support WP students in the transition to medicine.
