Abstract

The internet has become ever more present worldwide. Technological developments coupled with the pervasiveness of the internet have led to a constant evolution of the internet: new services provision, the mode of networking, the volume of data, new applications, etc. Computing services provided as a utility have also evolved and cloud computing has emerged as a viable model for service provision, with elasticity of resources leading to improved efficiency. At the heart of the expansion of the internet is the amount of data generated by all these activities: continual streams of sensed data by vast numbers of sensors, huge quantities of customer activity data in e-commerce and e-business sites, large datasets from public services such as the National Health Service in the UK for instance. Managing and analysing all this data has necessitated special techniques due to the sheer volume, speed and variety with which these datasets are produced and require processing. Big data relates to data of this nature, and also the techniques, platforms and infrastructure necessary for managing and analysing it. We survey the landscape suggested by current developments in the area of: the internet of things, cloud computing and big data.
