Abstract

The study of social brain offers some opportunities for improving education of classroom. This review focuses on the mentalizing network, set of brain areas that support thinking about thoughts, feelings, and goals of others. This network typically is competing with brain regions supporting analytical thought and memorization. This paper suggests our natural social tendencies can be leveraged to improve learning, rather than treating classroom learning and socializing as antithetical to one another. Recommendation is made for English class, as well as for other fields. Finally, it is proposed that educating adolescents about the social brain itself will reap educational rewards.
