Abstract

The co-authors of this article were brought together through their success in being awarded the BERA Early Career Researcher [ECR] Career Development Fellowship award in 2021. The award provided a much-needed confidence boost and provided encouragement to continue in academia, despite the often challenging aspects of transitioning from a doctoral student to a postdoctoral worker or member of academic staff. This is not an easy transition; it is filled with complexities (Eley et al., 2012) and is certainly not for the faint-hearted. In this piece, we offer reflection upon both the challenges and the successes that we have experienced as ECRs while navigating this gruelling (but also rewarding) landscape.
