Doing privatised sexuality education with children in Vietnam: territorialised knowledge and contested futures

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

Despite public recognition of the importance of effective sexuality education (sex-ed) in Vietnamese schools, there has been limited investment in developing a nationally accredited sex-ed curriculum. Consequently, sex-ed is primarily delivered by the private sector within a loosely regulated market. Through a critical autoethnographic lens, this presentation delves into my personal teaching experiences in a classroom with six children to understand how sex-ed becomes commodified and signified under the privatisation regime. It aims to uncover the consequences of privatized education, specifically its role in exacerbating social inequalities and distancing educators from their ethical commitments. Ultimately, this presentation advocates for the establishment of a nationalised sex-ed program in Vietnam.
