Abstract
'Breach' is a short work of fiction based on a real canal breach that occurred in November 2021 along the Leeds to Liverpool canal in a village called Rishton. The story was created with cross-community collaboration. Through a series of interviews, workshops and conversations, the stories of the people affected in different ways by the breach were woven together in the piece using verbatim, narrative integration, and editorial and consultative engagement with all contributors. The story is a piece of magic realism aiming to celebrate the ongoing practice of storytelling of those affected by the breach. The story was commissioned by Lancashire Libraries with funding from Arts Council England.
