Abstract
The host publication is a collection of autobiographical accounts of the world's leading evaluation theorists. This article was commissioned to comment on the collection. It shows that autobiographies such as these can provide a historical account of emergent research cultures in their contexts - each of the authors was an ideas innovator working on the cusp of social and methodological change. They serve as historical case studies.
