Abstract
This textbook presents the specifics of modern social work as a social institution, a sought-after field of professional activity, an interdisciplinary field of theoretical knowledge, and a field of specialist training. It analyzes the factors in the development of social work in the context of its relationship with social policy, which determines methods for providing assistance to consumers of social services. Particular attention is paid to the development of the professionalism and competence of social workers as specialists in the helping profession. The sections of the textbook feature relevant materials from open lectures given by the founder of the St. Petersburg Scientific School in the field of social work theory, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Vyacheslav Nikolaevich Kelasyev, Head of the Department of Social Work Theory and Practice at St. Petersburg State University. These lectures present social work as a field of social and humanitarian knowledge and practical social activity in various spheres of life. The appendix provides a brief overview of modern international approaches to the development of social work theory and practice, as well as promising areas of social work, allowing for a more detailed presentation of the problems of international social work and consideration of development opportunities for Russia. This textbook is intended for students of higher education institutions studying in the field of "Social Work", as well as for employees of social institutions and individuals interested in the development of modern theory and practice of social work.
