The aim of this study was to conduct an international, multi-site and discipline project to further validate the Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric (VGFCR).
The study explored registered nurses’, doctors, undergraduate (UG) nursing students and UG midwifery students' communication and family care skills during obstetric and paediatric simulations utilising the Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric (VGFCR). Five sites participated in the study: Minnesota State University, Mankato, USA (Principal Investigator); Mayo Health Clinic (US); Washington DC Children’s National Hospital (US); Keele University (UK); University of Salford (UK).

Key findings

Through use of the family care rubric, educators were able to evaluate learners’ performance and competency during family care simulation scenarios and provide consistent feedback.
