Biography
Simon Mercer is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and is the Year 5 Lead for the Medical School.
Simon is an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Aintree Hospital) where his clinical interests are in the management of difficult airway, trauma, emergency and vascular Anaesthesia. Prior to joining Edge Hill Simon was the Head of School for Health Education North West School of Anaesthesia and has also been the Director of Medical Education at Aintree Hospital. Simon was also previously the Clinical Director of the Centre for Simulation and Patient Safety (the regional high fidelity simulation centre)
Simon served for 20 years in the Royal Navy leaving in April 2018 with the rank of Surgeon Commander. He deployed as part of the field hospital on OPERATION TELIC (Iraq) and OPERATION HERRICK (Afghanistan) and also on many other deployments on various maritime platforms as part of the Role 2 Afloat Clinical Team.
Simon has research interests in human factors in trauma and his PhD thesis was entitled ‘Advances in Human Factors in Complex Trauma and Emergency Anaesthesia’. Google Scholar Profile (h-index 20)
