Biography
After teaching languages in secondary schools in Preston and Blackpool, Shirley taught primary pupils French and German in Key stage 2. Since completing her Masters in Educational Psychology, she began working at Edge Hill in 2006 as course leader for KS2/3 and Secondary Modern Foreign Languages. She has also fulfilled the Secondary year one leader role, supporting students academically and pastorally. She now works in the Faculty of Education as subject lead for primary languages.
Research interests
These include language learning outside the classroom, developing a teacher identity and cultural awareness and understanding.
External engagement
Shirley runs a Primary languages online "chit chat" meeting, once a term. This is for sharing good practice and supporting school partners, alumni and other colleagues with regards to primary language learning and teaching.
She is a HEI forum attendee and a member of ALL (The Association for Language Learning).
Shirley is working with partner schools in projects to support good teaching and learning in primary languages. She will be working with schools in Uganda in 2024.
