Shereen H. Shaw is an academic senior lecturer and researcher at Edge Hill University’s Faculty of Education. She also lectures in Existential Philosophy at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning as a guest lecturer. She first read for a double honours Bachelor’s in Arts in English and Comparative Literature & in Philosophy at The American University in Cairo (AUC). She graduated in 2006 with a Magna cum laude. There, Shereen was taught and attended seminars by some of the World’s most famous scholars like Edward Said, Ferial Ghazoul, Noam Chomsky and many others. Upon completing her studies, she lectured across several educational institutions from primary and secondary to teaching in Further and Higher education in the UK and the Middle East. Shereen read for a Master’s of Philosophy and Literature at the University of East Anglia (UEA) where she was supervised by Dr Rupert Reed and, poet, Dr Denise Riley. She subsequently went on to teach in Further Education at Bangor, North Wales and, during her post, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Training (PGCE) at the University of South Wales, Newport.
Shereen’s interdisciplinary research interest is in Philosophy, Literature, Gender and Middle Eastern studies and translation. In 2015, Shereen graduated with a doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Liverpool. The comparative thesis sheds light on an era in Arab history recognisable as ‘Arab Existentialism’. Growing up bilingual, Shereen uses her language skills to translate and add originality to her comparative studies. She translated as part of her doctorate thesis philosophical narratives from the 1950s which played a role in the history of Arabic literature. She presented her work at national and international conferences. Since her appointment at Edge Hill, Shereen has lectured on several UG, PG and MA programmes. Most notable among her academic posts is her nomination by students for a Staff Student Award on several occasions and her appointment as acting Programme leader for the Further Education and Training division. Shereen coordinated the work of a team of dedicated lecturers and senior lecturers to deliver quality content to future trainee teachers on the PGCE in Further Education programme. Shereen worked with others to maintain the excellence of the provision and to enhance teacher trainees' learning, teaching and professional experience at the Faculty of Education. Shereen currently teaches as part of the Religious Education team and is a module leader for several modules: REL1003 Easter Dharma (YR1 UG QTS), REL 2003 Judaism (YR2 QTS & BA), REL2004 Religion in the Public Sphere (YR 2 UG QTS), REL 3005 Contemporary Issues in Islam (YR3 QTS & BA), REL3006 gender, sexuality and Christianity (YR 3 UG BA), REL3007 Challenges and Controversies in Religion (YR 3 UG BA)
