    I teach modules across both the undergraduate and postgradute Creative Writing programmes at Edge Hill, focusing mostly on Fiction. I am the Module Leader for Introduction to Fiction, Advanced Fiction and teach on Writing Short Stories as well. I have also taught on Introduction to Non-Fiction, Genre & Popular Writing (The Graphic Novel) and The Writer at Work on the undergraduate. On the Creative Writing MA, I teach the Cultural Industries module. 


    I was born in 1978 in Cheshire, and moved to Glasgow to study English Literaure as an undergraduate. I then took the University of Glasgow MA in Creative Writing, followed by a PhD in English & Scottish Literature, also at the University of Glasgow. I am primarily a novelist, having published three so far: No Fireworks (Faber, 2005), Hope for Newborns (Faber, 2008) and Bring Me the Head of Ryan Giggs (Tindal Street/Serpent's Tail, 2012). I also wrote Alasdair Gray: A Secretary's Biography (Bloomsbury, 2008), which won a Somerset Maugham Award for Non-Fiction in 2009, and my other projects include LoveSexTravelMusik (Freight, 2013), a collection of short stories. Vairous fictions have been translated into Italian, serbian, as well as individual stories into Romanian, Slovenian, Danish and Albanian.

    My research interests include: Alasdair Gray Studies, Contemporary Scottish Literature, Jewish Writing, Chilean Literature, the contemporary short story, the contemporary novel
