Biography
Prior to joining Edge Hill as Senior Lecturer in Primary Education, Richard held many positions within schools for ten years. Richard has taught both Key Stage one and Key Stage two classes, was subject leader for Mathematics and Music, as well as, a member of the Senior Leadership team across three primary schools. Prior to completing his PGCE in Primary Education, Richard also taught within Further and adult Education as well as being a peripatetic music teacher across both primary and secondary schools.
Since joining Edge Hill University, Richard has undertaken the role of Programme Leader for the BA(Hons) Children and Young People's learning and development and more recently, Programme Leader for the School Direct and Holy Cross provision of the PGCE. Richard is also the Pupil Premium Lead for the department of Primary and Childhood Education.
Research interests
Behaviour
Richard possesses a passionate interest in behaviour management and has undertaken significant training within this area. In particular, Richard has completed training within the field of Restorative Practice and has successfully implemented this approach across two primary schools. In his role as Senior Lecturer, Richard offers CPD in this area and works closely with partnerships to offer advice.
Adaptive Mathematics Teaching
Richard is passionate about ensuring that primary mathematics education is inclusive through adopting effective adaptive teaching approaches. He is specifically interested in the prevalence that has been given to SEND by Ofsted and how this is seen as the 'golden thread' that runs through the curriculum. To this end, Richard is currently involved in producing a book for trainee and early career teachers on embedding SEND across primary mathematics teaching. Whilst undertaking this project, Richard is engaging with and drawing from knowledge-based data and research.
Teaching
Richard teaches across various programmes spanning level 4-level 7 at Edge Hill including the BA(Hons) Primary Education and Primary PGCE. With regards to subjects, Richard's teaching incorporates Mathematics, Music, RE and Professional Studies.
Richard is also module leader for the BA(Hons) Primary Education year one Mathematics Module.

Richard is currently External Examiner for the BA(Hons) Primary Education with QTS programme at Leeds Beckett University.
