Mia Swart is a Senior Lecturer in International Human Rights Law at Edge Hill University. She is an expert in international criminal law, transitional justice and human rights law.
Mia received a PhD in international law from Leiden University in 2006 and a LLM (magna cum laude) from Humboldt University, Berlin in 1999. She was the recipient of the Mandela scholarship as well as a recipient of the the Huygens scholarship.
She previously worked as Professor of International Law at the University of Johannesburg and as Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In 2010 and 2011 she held the position of Assistant Professor of Global Justice at Leiden University.
She is also an admitted attorney in the High Court of South Africa.
She received the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship in 2007 as well as in 2009, 2016 and 2021.
She consulted for UNDP in Palestine in 2014 and for Amnesty International (Southern Africa) in 2014 and 2015.
