    Biography

    Lai is a Registered General Nurse and a Mental Health Nurse. Currently she is  the Associate Head in the Mental Health and Learning Disability Department, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions. Faculty Health, Social Care & Medicine. She is a line manager, has teaching responsibilities, academic supervisor to postgraduate dissertation students and has responsibilities as quality lead for the school.  

     

    Teaching: 

    Lai started her nursing career in orthopaedic inpatient care in the 80s and moved into mental health nursing during the 90s. She has a short career as a Health Promotion Officer for ethnic women and breast screening. This was as Department of Health Project which Lai was part of a national project to explore ways of working with ethnic women to attend breast screening.  

    Lai has worked as a Community Mental Health Nurse and a team coordinator from 1996 to 2000. This has brought out her interest in teaching and using psychosocial interventions with people suffering from psychosis.  

    In 2000, Lai commence her career in teaching and gain her teaching qualification (PGCTLS) and MA Clinical Education. Teaching mainly focused on psychosocial interventions, managing risk in mental health, physical health needs in mental health and cognitive behavioural therapy.  Lai has worked with the team to developed first masters programme for post qualified staff. Since then the CPD department has grown its postgraduate provisions and became an Academic Lead, monitoring and advisory on quality assurance these provisions.  

    Lai has worked as an honorary therapist one day a week for a local mental health trust between 2010 to 2015. She was commissioned to provide clinical supervision once a month for a local hospice between 2017 to 2020.   

    2016 to 2019, Lai’s teaching was mainly been in clinical education, managing MCh and MMed programme, academic supervisor to postgraduate dissertation students and assist with the restructuring of Medical Education department. 

     

    Research interest:  

    Psychosocial interventions, mental health wellbeing, clinical supervision, reflective practice, psychological therapies, online teaching and learning..
