Personal profile

Research interests

I have research interests in accounting history, and am currently looking at medieval accounting records relating to Paisley (Scotland) and Furness Abbey (England).  I have wider interests in transport, public policy, professions, and corporate governance.

I am a qualified CA with ICAS, having trained with Deloitte LLP in audit. I also have significant experience of working in the public sector, at HM Treasury and Transport for London, in a variety of policy and strategy roles in a management capacity. I have experience of business planning and budgeting processes, performance indicators and balanced scorecards.

I hold a Ph.D from the University of Cambridge, and my thesis focussed on fifteenth and sixteenth century parish religion in England.  The thesis was developed into a monograph in 2001, and several other related studies were also published in journals and edited volumes between 1995 and 2004.

I am an experienced teacher of a range of subjects including financial accounting, tax, mathematics and statistics, people and project management, and accounting for business students.  I have also supervised undergraduate dissertations on a range of business-related topics.  I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the University of the West of Scotland.
