JANE SPILSBURY

    Personal profile

    Biography

Passionate about fostering a strong foundation in mathematics for future educators, I am committed to promoting best practices and improving student outcomes through both my teaching and leadership roles.

    Research Interest

My current research explores PGCE students' self-perception of confidence in mathematics, with the aim of understanding how this impacts their teaching practice and how we can implement change to enhance student subject knowledge.

    Teaching and Learning

As a Senior Lecturer, I am dedicated to enhancing learning and development across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As Year 3 Lead for the Primary undergraduate school-based programme, I have coordinated course delivery, work closely with module leaders and tutors, and ensure consistency and quality engaging with student feedback to promote continuous improvement and manage change effectively. I support students and mentors during professional placements as link tutor, ensuring effective communication, and maintaining quality assurance between partner schools and the university. Additionally, as a Personal Academic Tutor, I focus on students’ academic, personal, and professional development, addressing concerns related to attendance and wellbeing to ensure their success. As Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Lead, I am responsible for the organisation and delivery of the preparation course with subsequent recommendations and as the TACPD Lead I support our external partners in their personal and aspirational development. In addition, I am also an Associate Teaching and Learning Fellow and a member of the University Academic Board, actively contributing to academic integrity and effectiveness across the faculty.

    Previous roles

In my previous role as PGCE Primary Placement Quality Assurance Lead, I ensured that our students received high-quality learning opportunities throughout their placements and facilitated interventions and support plans where appropriate to ensure our students received the best possible outcomes during practice. I also led the English as an Additional Language Strand, overseeing curriculum content and delivery across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, alongside staff professional development.

    Roles prior to HE

Before transitioning to academia, I gained extensive experience in primary schools, having worked across all year groups from EYFS to Year 6. As an Assistant Headteacher, I led multiple areas including EYFS, Key Stage 1, Mathematics, Science, SSP, and Reading, and I am also a qualified LSA.

    Public/media engagement

    Charity

As an advocate for Box4Kids, part of the Barrie Wells Trust, I facilitate VIP events for disabled and seriously ill children, fostering memorable experiences and networking. Barrie Wells MBE received an honorary doctorate of Business Administration from Edge Hill University in 2014 and reflects university values and my own.
