    Biography

    My name is Professor Jacqueline (Jackie) Leigh, and I am a Registered General Nurse, Adult field. Having worked as a senior nurse in healthcare organisations across Greater Manchester, I transitioned into higher education initially as a Lecturer Practitioner, progressing to lecturer, senior lecturer, Reader and in 2018 awarded a personal chair at the University of Salford via the Teaching and Learning/Student Success pathway. I have left the role of Professor of Nurse Education Practice at the University of Salford to take up the role of Director of Nursing & Midwifery Education here at Edge Hill University.

    An advocate for evidence- based education, I have significant experience in developing and evaluating innovative approaches to teaching and learning that meets workforce needs in nursing, health, and social care. For example, I have experience of working across Greater Manchester and the Northwest of England creating opportunities for the development of the healthcare workforce around nursing, midwifery and interprofessional supervision and assessment in practice.

    My expertise in nurse education practice is recognised at the highest level receiving multiple learning and teaching awards including Advance HE Principal Fellow, National Teaching Fellow, Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence, and multiple University of Salford Vice Chancellor Distinguished Teaching Awards.  I am a member of Sigma: Global Nursing Excellence and as Deputy Chair Healthwatch Salford, I influence the delivery and design of local services-not just for people who use them now, but anyone who might need them in the future.

    I have experience of curriculum development and postgraduate programme leadership, for example, I was invited to sit on the national Level 7 Trailblazer Senior Leader Apprenticeship Standard Stakeholder group, and I successfully introduced the Standard into Salford Business School and School Health & Society’s leadership and management programmes. I have experience of leading on Gateway 2 submission for the range of NMC validated programmes.

    As an Executive Coach I particularly enjoy supporting individuals to learn and develop and reach their full potential. As an experienced UK NHS Leadership Academy Healthcare Leadership 360 Feedback Facilitator (individual and group), I coach and mentor senior healthcare leaders as part of the Northwest Leadership Academy mentoring scheme.

    I am an active editorial board member of British Journal of Nursing, frequently publishing papers around nurse education practice. I co-lead the national Personalised Care Interprofessional Education (PerCIE) Framework: A guide and support framework to enable health and social care students to learn about strengths-based approaches to health and wellbeing delivered by services that provide a social prescribing offer.

    I have experience of creating and communicating a vision, setting up systems that promote knowledge exchange such as leading Salford Community for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (SCELT: http://hub.salford.ac.uk/scelt/, and implementing practice learning strategic changes, offering a community for engaging in scholarship and research and evaluation around teaching and learning.
