Biography
Hayley Price
Lecturer in Midwifery | Edge Hill University
I joined Edge Hill University in 2023 from clinical practice, bringing over a decade of diverse midwifery experience. I qualified as a direct-entry midwife in 2012 from Canterbury Christ Church University and have worked across a wide range of midwifery settings.
My clinical background includes roles as a rotational midwife providing inpatient maternity care, an elective caesarean section midwife delivering high dependency care, and as a caseloading midwife with 121 Midwives in the North West, where I offered continuity of care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods. I am passionate about home birth and low-risk intrapartum care and have completed additional training in aromatherapy in midwifery practice to support physiological birth.
In my most recent clinical role, I worked as a continuity of carer midwife in a socioeconomically deprived area with complex safeguarding cases. This experience deepened my commitment to social justice in maternity care and strengthened my professional focus on safeguarding. I became a safeguarding supervisor, providing reflective supervision and support to midwives caring for vulnerable families. These experiences continue to shape my teaching and research interests, particularly in the areas of social deprivation, maternal mental health, and safeguarding.
Research interests
My academic interests include student engagement, inclusive education, and curriculum development. I am committed to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and actively contribute to the Faculty EDI Group. My work focuses on improving the experiences of students from ethnic minority backgrounds and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities two distinct yet often intersecting areas requiring targeted approaches to support and belonging. I also advocate for women in healthcare education and students with neurodiverse profiles.
With a strong commitment to lifelong learning, I plan to undertake a Master’s in Midwifery to further enhance my academic expertise and continue contributing meaningfully to midwifery education and research.
External engagement
I hold the position of Lecturer in Midwifery at Edge Hill, with a specialist focus on practice learning and clinical education. As a Link Practice Lecturer (LPL), I provide strategic and operational leadership in placement capacity and allocation, practice learning evaluations, and educational audits. I maintain regular communication with our clinical partners, holding weekly meetings with Practice Education Facilitators (PEFs) across all Trusts. I also serve as an Academic Assessor and lead on training to ensure compliance with SSSA standards.
I am developing my scholarship in strategies to reduce maternal and infant mortality, with a particular focus on tackling systemic bias and addressing disproportionate outcomes for women from ethnic minority backgrounds and women living in socioeconomic deprivation. This includes collaborative work with clinical partners to improve safety, access, and equity within maternity services.
I also act as the Student Voice Survey (SVS) Champion, reviewing and sharing feedback to support continuous enhancement of the student experience.
Teaching
My clinical teaching interests include the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE), neonatal care, maternal mental health, and high dependency care for women. I am passionate about equipping students to understand and safely contribute to the care of complex cases. I contribute to teaching, learning, and assessment across both undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery programmes, including simulation-based learning, interprofessional education, and academic supervision. I also have a strong interest in home birth and low-risk intrapartum care, and have completed specialist training in aromatherapy in midwifery practice to further support physiological birth.
