    Biography

    Dr Craig Keenan is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science within the Medical School at Edge Hill University. Craig graduated from the University of Liverpool (UoL) with an MChem in Medicinal Chemistry w/Pharmacology before going on to complete an MRes in Biomedical Science and then gaining his PhD in Musculoskeletal Biology from UoL, focussing on the rare disease Alkaptonuria, its identification and inhibition in pre-clinical models, and the development of severe osteoarthritis associated with the disease.

    Craig has presented at National/International conferences including Bone Research Society; British Society for Matrix Biology; Rheumatology; International Workshop on Alkaptonuria; International Workshop on the CCN Family of Genes; Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) and the International Medical Postgraduate Conference. He has published his work in Annals of Rheumatic Diseases; Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease Reports; Osteoarthritis & Cartilage; Disease Models & Mechanisms and European Cells and Materials.

    Research interests

    Research interests include: pathogenesis of osteoarthritis; the identification of novel targets to help prevent and progression of osteoarthritis; the role of microRNAs in osteoarthritis and Alkaptonuria (rare metabolic degenerative joint disease); the role of nutrients in osteoarthritis; widening participation/access in medicine (developing resources/programmes to support underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds to successfully apply for a place in medical school)
