Biography
Dr Amanda Miller is the Head of Simulation and Skills Education in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine. Amanda joined Edge Hill University in October 2022 and is a Senior Learning and Teaching Fellow (Simulation). Amanda qualified as a Children's Nurse in 1997 and before beginning her academic career she worked in a variety of practice areas, including paediatric accident & emergency, children's community and children’s oncology/haematology. In 2006, she joined the University of Salford as a Lecturer in Children and Young People’s Nursing and during her time there, developed her expertise in the use of simulation-based education as a pedagogical approach.
Amanda completed her PhD in 2019 titled "Young people’s involvement in simulation with students of children and young people’s nursing: an exploratory interpretive study". She has supervised three PhD students to completion.
Amanda has received several awards during her time working in higher education. This includes the Dean’s Outstanding Staff Achievement Group Award, the Vice Chancellors Distinguished Group Teaching Award (2018) and two individual merit awards.
Amanda has presented at numerous national/international conferences including AdvanceHE, Nurse Education Today, Association for Simulation in Healthcare Practice, Scottish Clinical Skills Network Conference and Children and Young People’s Nurse Academic UK. She has published papers in Clinical Simulation in Nursing, Nursing Children and Young People and Comprehensive Child and Adolescent Nursing. Amanda has also written one book and several book chapters.
Amanda has a keen interest in simulation-based education research. In 2018 she undertook collaborative international research with colleagues from Washington DC Hospital, Minnesota State University and Keele University to evaluate a family-care rubric for use in simulation. Other research interests include interprofessional education/learning, simulation in nurse education, children and young people.
