I am senior university leader, with over 21 years of experience in the further and higher education sectors. I have a sustained track record of excellence in leadership in teaching and learning from foundation level to doctoral work across programmes in education and the humanities, and in curriculum development for professional development. I have a strong credentials in strategic research leadership and development, and in knowledge exchange. As a senior academic, I have led and managed strategic change; devised and delivered projects with teams; built infrastructure; worked across institutions at all levels, and have successfully engaged colleagues, and forged effective partnerships with organisations and communities.
I am an established and well-published researcher with interests are in the field of public and community philosophy; higher education and philosophy of higher education; philosophy through film, art, drama and literature. I have collaborated successfully on inter-disciplinary research projects nationally and internationally. My work is informed by American pragmatism, the Transcendentalist essayists and poets, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and by continental philosophy in the work of Stanley Cavell, Martin Buber. I research on the idea of the interpersonal in the dramatic works of the philosopher Gabriel Marcel, and analyse the literary oeuvre of the Scottish modernist novelist and poet, Anna Shepherd, to develop the idea of poetic environmental activism. I have published in internationally renowned peer reviewed journals, and with leading academic publishers (Bloomsbury, Routledge and Springer).
I have significant reviewing and editorial board experience, including a current role as Associate Editor for the British Educational Research Journal. I hold leading elected positions in a number of internationally-renowned learned societies, and am Chair Elect of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain.
