Focus on integration of diagnostic and testing solutions with existing systems and workflows. Diagnostics that are incompatible with existing workflows or require new platforms face adoption barriers. The need to retrofit or completely overhaul current laboratory set-ups can deter institutions from adopting innovative technologies, especially when the perceived benefits do not clearly outweigh the costs and efforts of integration. Equally, technologies that result in long turnaround times, even if they offer more clinically actionable information, can often be very difficult to fit within existing workflows (e.g. appointments with primary care physicians are often 5–15 minutes long, limiting the use of many point-of-care tests).
