The Holy land: peace, promises, problems, 1096-1918

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesOrganising a conference, workshop, etc.

Description

What were the origins of the struggle for power in the Holy Land after the collapse of the Ottoman empire? What was the relationship between Europeans, Palestinians, Jews and the Holy Land before that moment? And how far back in history should we go to find the roots of European Orientalism, Palestinian nationalism, and Zionism?

Bringing together leading scholars, our conference explores these questions, from the time of the Crusades until the end of the Great War. The event is led by the Edge Hill final year History class, ‘Seeds of Conflict in the Holy Land’, in collaboration with the International Centre on Racism, and organised by Professor James Renton.
