These training sessions (10 hours) were delivered as part of the RUN-EU PLUS Horizon 2020 project, which forms part of an integrated, long-term research and innovation strategy within the European University framework. The programme involved 50 academic participants from eight RUN-EU universities across eight European countries: Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Austria, the Netherlands and Hungary. It was designed to support capacity-building in doctoral and research supervision across transnational, industry-facing contexts.
The training was aimed at senior academics with prior experience of supervising industry-linked PhD research, who acted as mentors, alongside early career academics, who participated as mentees and sought to develop their supervisory skills through peer learning, structured reflection and mentoring-based professional development.
The programme consisted of two interactive online sessions of two hours for each group — mentors and mentees — providing a structured space for knowledge exchange, skills development and critical reflection on supervisory practice. A final two-hour joint online supervision session brought mentors and mentees together, fostering collaborative learning and the practical application of mentoring strategies in PhD and Master’s by Research supervision, with a specific focus on industry contexts. Upon completion of the training and submission of a self-reflective piece, participants received a digital badge recognising their engagement with the programme and the development of mentoring- and supervision-related competencies.
Overall, the training programme aimed to equip senior academics with enhanced mentoring skills, enabling them to support early career academics in strengthening their supervisory confidence, developing effective mentoring relationships, and contributing to the design and supervision of PhD and Master’s by Research projects in collaboration with industry.
I changed mainly “and was designed” into a new sentence after the list of countries, because the original sentence was a little long. I also changed “mentoring and supervision-related competencies” to “mentoring- and supervision-related competencies”, which is grammatically cleaner.
