About Dr Sally-Ann Ashton
Dr Sally-Ann Ashton is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and Senior Research Scientist and Research Division Lead in the Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center at Prairie View A&M University. She holds an MPhil in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Investigative Psychology from the University of Huddersfield. Her PhD, completed at the University of Huddersfield, examined the psychosocial risk factors associated with gang membership, co-offending and desistance from crime.
She is a two-time recipient of the National Gang Crime Research Center’s Frederick Milton Thrasher Award for superior accomplishments in gang research, awarded in 2017 and 2024, and also received the Frederick Milton Thrasher Award for superior accomplishments in gang training in 2020. Her applied research focuses on gang prevention and response strategies, violent adolescent offending, psychological risk, trauma, cognitive and personality development, mental health, community policing in vulnerable communities, and police legitimacy.
